Who is God?
There is one God (Eph. 4:4-6) who is the creator of the universe (Gen. 1:1; Heb. 11:13). He is a personal God who is infinite in all his attributes. While by no means exhaustive, it is evident that God is a God of Love (1 John 4:8-9), Justice (Isa. 61:8), Holiness (Rev. 15:4), and mercy (Jas. 5:11). While God is One, he has revealed himself in three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. These three persons are distinctly seen in scripture, but they are all one God.
The Father is the first person of the Trinity. He is a relational God, desiring a relationship with and the salvation of his creation (2 Pet. 3:9). This love led God the Father to send the Son to enact a scheme of redemption by which mankind might be saved (John 3:16-17).
The Son is the second person of the Trinity. The Son humbled himself (Phil. 2:5-8) and took on flesh (John 1:1-2, 14) as the man Jesus. He did this so that he might willingly lay down his life to take away the sins of mankind (1 John 2:1-2). Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead on the third day. Jesus established the church and is the leader of it (Col. 1:2).
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He has revealed the Word of God by inspiring the Bible authors (1 Pet. 1:20-21). He supplied Christians with supernatural spiritual gifts in the early church to confirm the gospel message (Acts 2:1-4). Today, he continues to convict the hearts of men toward the truth of God’s Word (John 16:8)
